Central Park, Haworth, United Kingdom
Quick description
At the heart of Haworth village, the park attracts visitors to the play area and bowls, but it’s most renowned for its beautiful flower gardens.
What’s there?
Central Park, Haworth, is English Heritage Grade 2 Listed, and since 2006 it has carried the esteemed Green Flag status, which recognises high-quality green spaces across England and Wales.
Its beautiful flower gardens are enjoyed by visitors, who can relax on the grass, enjoy the views and escape from the hustle and bustle of Haworth Main Street.
Memory Garden
The memory garden, consisting of pillars and flower beds, was constructed by Keighley Technical College students. The centrepiece of the garden is a stainless-steel structure created by local artist Craig Dyson called “The Meet.” The design for the structure represents a bird’s wing, and visitors are invited to attach a padlock in memory of their loved ones. Beyond the pillars at the entrance is a stainless-steel arch, which guides people to a quiet spot for contemplation.
Bandstand
The Lord Mayor of Bradford officially opened the new structure in June 2014. Unique in its design, the bandstand is at ground level to accommodate a range of uses.
History
Central Park in Haworth opened in 1927, which is marked by a stone plaque at the west entrance. At first, the park did not include facilities for organised games. Then on 12th May 1937, a tablet was erected to commemorate the opening of the Bowling Green and Pavilion on the Coronation Day of their Majesties King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth.
Natural history
The wildlife that can be found at Central Park, Haworth include badgers, foxes, squirrels, rabbits, bats, owls, woodpeckers, pheasants, and a variety of other bird species. There are also many species of butterflies, moths, and other insects to be found in the park.
